I was 10 years old when I was first diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma on my pelvis. I had chemotherapy and radiotherapy, but at the age of 15 I relapsed with Ewing’s Sarcoma again - this time on my head. I had to have chemo and radiotherapy again, and even high dose chemo.
My diagnosis was during a difficult time for me, with preparing for my GCSE exams in year 11 at school. I had to miss school, revision sessions and some exams, however I still managed to sit four exams.
With treatment, I lost my hair and I put on lots of weight because of the steroids. It made me not want to take part in things with my school friends and I didn’t even want to go to prom. But after attending a Teens Unite Beauty Day and other activities, it really boosted my confidence and helped me through treatment. I decided to go to my school prom, and I even was voted prom queen!
My hospital experience really opened my eyes; I learnt how even the smallest things in life are so important, such as the calming feeling of sitting on my garden swing in Summer looking at the flowers. Because of this, I try to be as kind and as positive as I can every day.
I have been to some amazing Teens Unite activities and days out: beauty days, theatre trips, siblings days, a craft workshop at the Broadgate Tower and the Paradise Wildlife Park visit. I am looking forward to going to the Escape Rooms this month too! These trips have been amazing for me during and after treatment; they are treats that help me to make new friends with other young people who have had similar experiences to me.
They help me to gain confidence and we get to go to new places and learn some cool things! I love going to Teens Days because they always have really fun activities! Thank you Teens Unite.
